I received an invitation to see America’s Poet Laureate at UW-Milwaukee. As I read his description, I noticed there were several similarities between Juan and myself. Kind of. Let’s take a look. I’ll highlight my version in yellow and what I’m omitting for Juan in red:
Juan Felipe Herrera Brian Allen Jaeger is the first LatinoWisconsinite to hold the post of U.S. Poet Laureate (2015-16). The son of migrant farmers, he is the author of 30 300 books and lessons including collections of poetry, prose, short stories, young adult novels, and picture books for children as well as the recipient of many prestigious awards. We invite you to hear HerreraJaeger read selections from his works.
The reading is free and open to the public - please share our invitation with friends and family! Books will be available for purchase at the event.
Sounds like a visit from America’s Poet Laureate is immensely popular. I may go, just to see what life would be like had I become a semi-famous author instead of a teacher or construction worker. I think it's great that you can go see our national Poet Laureate for free but would have to pay to see the Harry Potter or Twilight or Hunger Games authors spew out cliche. It's also funny that Juan has won "many prestigious awards." Me too. I just gave myself the "Guy Who Writes an Article While His Wife Grocery Shops Award." Very prestigious.
